The Passion of Remembrance at the Cinematek in Brussels

October 17, 2023

The Passion of Remembrance (1986), directed by Isaac Julien and Maureen Blackwood and produced by Sankofa Film and Video Collective was screened at the Cinematek in Brussels on the 2nd of October.

This vivid restoration in 4K was done by the British Film Institute and presented at the London Film Festival in 2022.

In his review for the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw writes: "Most striking in this movie are the extended montage sequences (the framing device being that these are the work of an art student): we see protests, demos and police confrontation which Blackwood and Julien have formed into a hypnotic and brilliant collage, tinting and grading the colour and adding a hip-hop soundtrack including the Aleem brothers. The effect is entirely absorbing; easily the most interesting and creative use of this kind of archive material I have ever seen."
