Isaac Julien at the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.

The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC opens One Life: Frederick Douglass, celebrating the life of the African American abolisionist, orator and writer.

 

The exhibition highlights the long arc and significance of Douglass' life, from slave to fugitive to internationally acclaimed abolitionist, women's rights activist, and statesman after the Civil War. 

 

The most photographed American of the ninteenth century, the exhibiton features Isaac Julien's Reception (2019), taken from his Lessons of the Hour series which was developed in conjunction with the release of his 2019 film installation of the same name.
